Description |
Named after the two large watersheds that flow through the riding, Pelly-Nisutlin was created when the Faro riding and part of Ross River-Southern Lakes merged in 2002 after an electoral boundary review. It is a large geographical riding, encompassing the communities of Johnson's Crossing, Teslin, Ross River, Faro and Little Salmon. Teslin, home to about 400 people, is located in the southern portion of the riding along the Alaska Highway.
The Teslin Tlingit First Nation was among the first to settle its land claim more than a decade ago and is now grappling with implementation. Ross River, with a population of 354, is mainly a First Nations community. The local Kaska do not have a finalized land-claim deal and are not in negotiations.
Faro, on the other hand, is primarily a non-native community. A former mining town, it is now trying to reinvent itself to attract residents. The huge Faro lead-zinc mine closed in the 1990s. About 390 people live in Faro, hundreds fewer than when the mine was in production.
The Pelly-Nisutlin region is rich in minerals and several mining companies have advanced projects, such as Yukon Zinc's Wolverine deposit and True North Gems' emerald deposit.
