Description Wales
Part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Wales is one country within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Originally a united kingdom of itself in 844, Wales is now a prinicipality of the reigning Royal House of Windsor. Present-day Wales was created by King Henry VIII and his Act of Union in 1536, consolidating Welsh territories with territories of England. Today, Wales is on the road to devolution. It is slowly gaining autonomy in domestic affairs. British Parliament allowed for the creation of a devolved government for Wales with powers of autonomous administration invested in the National Assembly of Wales. Wales is composed of 11 county boroughs, 9 counties and 2 cities and counties.
