The Principality of Liechtenstein was established within the Holy Roman Empire on January 23, 1719 as the Imperial Principality of Liechtenstein. It became independent of the Holy Roman Empire on July 12, 1806. The country is located in Central Europe between Austria and Switzerland. As a constitutional monarchy, Liechtenstein is governed by the Prince who is its Head of State. The Prime Minister is Head of Government and is appointed from the unicameral Parliament. Having no military of its own, Liechtenstein is defended by Switzerland's Armed Forces.
