Description Republic of Colombia
Republica de Colombia

Formerly a member state of the Spanish Colony of Gran Colombia (which included Ecuador and Venezuela), Colombia is a Northern South American nation bordering the Caribbean Sea between Panama and Venezuela and bordering the North Pacific Ocean between Ecuador and Panama. The Colombian population is 58% mestizo, 20% white, 14% mulatto and the rest are black and Amerindian. Colombians are overwhelmingly Roman Catholic with 90% professing its creed. With its capital in Bogota, Colombia is comprised of 32 departments or states and a single capital district.

As a republic, Colombia is led by a popularly elected President who stands as both head of state and government, who with the Vice President, serves four-year terms. The Cabinet is created by the President from a coalition of the two dominant political parties. Legislation is the jurisdiction of the bicameral Congress, comprised of a Senate and House of Representatives. All Congress members from both chambers are elected by popular vote to four-year terms.
