Description |
Ceremonial office after Suriname gained independence from the Netherlands on Nov. 25, 1975, and adopted a parliamentary form of democracy.
After a coup on Feb. 25, 1980 put in Lt. Col. Desi Bouterse (who was Suriname's dictator until Jan, 25, 1988), presidents became mere puppets of the regime.
A constitution written in 1987 enhanced the powers of the president, making him head of state, head of government and commander-in-chief of the Suriname National Army, and elections held that year brought Ramsewak Shankar in as president. But Bouterse still controlled the presidency and Suriname sub rosae until the Christmas Eve army coup of 1990 (known as the "telephone coup") led by Cmdr. Ivan Graanoogst.
Graanoogst nominally stripped Bouterse and the president of their powers and temporarily assumed control until Johan Kraag was chosen on Dec. 29, 1990 by the Assembly as Acting President of Suriname.
A unitary (where a president has enhanced powers) parliamentary system was established in 1991.
