Description |
Souris (pop.1,248) is the largest urban centre in this rural riding, which is comprised of the northeastern tip of P.E.I. Potatoes are grown in the interior, but the big potato story in the riding is AgraWest, a potato-granule potato-flour production plant in Souris which, with about 80 employees, is the major employer in the region. Other major industries include a tuna and lobster fishery out of North Lake.
Provincial investment in this region has been relatively heavy. There has been financial support for AgraWest, and substantial re-investment in the Railway Museum in Elmira. The Railway Museum is part of a triad of major tourism attractions, which also includes the East Point Lighthouse and the beach and Fisheries Museum at Basin Head.
