At the foot of South Mountain lies a small town founded in 1792 by two brothers, George and William Boone (cousins of Daniel Boone). Originally named Margaretsville in honor of William Boone’s wife, the town saw its name change several times throughout the years—from Margaretsville to Margaret Boones Ville, then to Boonesborough, and eventually to Boonsboro.
