Description |
The largest Vancouver Island riding, it extends from Tweedsmuir in the northeast corner, through Mount Waddington Regional District and Strathcona Regional District to Strathcona Provincial Park and the Pacific Ocean in the south.
The riding includes Campbell River in the southeast, Alert Bay, Port Hardy, Port Alice, Port McNeil, Sayward and Gold River.
Port Hardy is the departure point for the BC Ferries Discovery Coast Passage route to Bella Coola.
North Vancouver Island is one of largest commercial fishing centres on the coast. Salmon is an integral part of the riding, be it commercial or sport fishing.
There are many native reserves in riding – in the 2006 census, the aboriginal population was 13.8%.
In 2008 redistribution, kept all of the riding and added 1% from Powell River-Sunshine Coast.
