Description This constituency is something of a chimera, having been stitched together from a combination of wards from a total of four previous seats. It has a peculiar bottleneck shape to match its somewhat inelegant name. The Poole side includes the towns of Alderney and Canford Magna and Creekmoor and the Mid Dorset contribution includes the rural areas of St Martin and Bere Regis and the small town of Wareham, which includes a memorial to Lawrence of Arabia. North Poole itself is mainly a residential suburb of the area, with above average numbers of economically active people and a high number of owner-occupiers in mostly modern housing. A significant number of commuters who work in Bournemouth or Poole live in this area. The sections of Poole which lend the seat the majority of its electorate have long shown a Liberal Democrat bias in local elections, and the seat was the target of the party's ambitions for many years. Only a significantly below average swing in 1997 enabled Conservative Christopher Fraser to hold the seat, and his luck finally ran out in 2001 when Annette Brooke, a popular former mayor of Poole, took the seat for the Liberal Democrats with a slender 384 vote majority.
