Description Sidmouth was once famed for being the only town in the country regularly to return a Loony Party candidate to its council. But then he defected to the Conservatives and normal service was resumed. Tory Hugo Swire secured the seat in 2001 with a 17.1% majority, while the Liberal Democrats took second place. Light industry is found in the seat's largest town, Exmouth, but the small workforce in this constituency mainly depends on the tourist trade and other seasonal professions. This is retirement country, and is home to the second largest proportion of pensioners in the country. The retired residents, like the large number of older tourists, are attracted by the peace and quiet, warm climate and beautiful landscape. The elderly population is particularly concentrated in genteel towns like Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth, while the small Labour vote comes mainly from Exmouth. Devon East has in the past proved to be a sympathetic environment for UKIP - this was one of the few seats where they held their deposit in 2001 - and the party came second overall in the 2004 European elections.
