Description West Ham was formed from the old constituencies of Newham North West and three wards from Newham South. Since 1983, the seat has been held by the maverick and colourful former minister of sport, London mayoral contender and anti-fox hunter, Tony Banks. Mr Banks was initially selected for Newham North West, replacing the veteran right-winger, Arthur Lewis. He is standing down at this election. West Ham is the inner of Newham's constituencies. A heavy industrial town in the 19th Century, it has a strong tradition of trade union activity and Labour support. As with many East London seats, there is a large and growing ethnic minority population. Fewer than 40% of residents are white, while 27% are of Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi origin. There are some council estates, but the area largely consists of small terraced houses around Plaistow, Manor Park and Forest Gate. The north-west corner of the constituency includes the Stratford town centre, which is a thriving shopping area and is rising fast, not least because of the DLR, Jubilee line extension and proposed Channel Tunnel rail link. The area will benefit most of all if the 2012 Olympic Games are brought to London. West Ham is famous for its football club (the Hammers) and the bigoted Alf Garnett in TV's "Till Death Do Us Part". Locally, Labour holds sway, with all but one of the council seats - the Christian People's Alliance holds the other.
