Description One of three seats in the west London borough of Hillingdon - part of a suburban sprawl which was once a collection of individual villages, including Ickenham, Cowley, Hillingdon, Colham, Yiewsley and West Drayton. Development has merged them into one. Many constituents often think of themselves as living in Middlesex rather than west London. There are good road links to London and the rest of the country through the proximity of the M4, M25 and M40. The constituency sits at the end of the Piccadilly and Metropolitan tube lines. A major source of employment in the area is RAF Uxbridge, which houses both the Central Band and Queen's Colour Squadron. Much of the Battle of Britain was conducted from the bunker here. Brunel University is also in the constituency. There are also several nature reserves here. This was the scene of the first by-election after the 1997 General Election. The sitting MP, Tory Sir Michael Shersby, died only a week after the election in which he had won by only 724. However, the Tories managed to hold the seat with local shop owner John Randall who increased the party's majority to 3,766. The Conservatives also did well in the 1998 local elections and Mr Randall kept his seat in 2001 with a majority of 2,100.
