Islington North is the upper, traditional working-class end of the London borough of Islington - the second most densely-populated constituency in the country and home to a substantial immigrant and Irish community. Nearly 65% of the population lives in rented accommodation - about half of those in council-owned properties. The constituency stretches from the borders of gentrified Upper Street, along either side of the Holloway Road up to the Archway and includes the Whittington Hospital, Finsbury Park and the Arsenal football stadium at Highbury. The building of Arsenal's new ground has been a major local issue. Its MP is one of Labour's staunchest left-wingers and regular rebels, Jeremy Corbyn, who has represented the seat since 1983. In 2001 his majority was nearly 43% over his nearest Liberal Democrat rival. The Greens do well here - in 2001 their performance was the sixth best in the country. The constituency has had some interesting Labour party history. In 1981 and 1982 all the Labour MPs in the then three Islington constituencies defected to the SDP. Defections also happened locally, creating the first SDP-controlled council. However, after the May 1982 local elections, the SDP were left with only one councillor. By the 1983 general election, the three seats had become two. One of the defectors, Michael O'Halloran, stood in Islington North as Independent Labour against both official Labour and the SDP. However, Jeremy Corbyn comfortably won the seat, with the SDP and O'Halloran in third and fourth place.
