Description |
Ilford is a town which most would say was in Essex but is in fact part of the outer London borough of Redbridge. Ilford North's position on the London/Essex border means it has many commuters who can enjoy the expanse of rural land in the seat, including two country parks. The constituency is less diverse than neighbouring Ilford South, although there is a substantial Jewish population. There is an area of council housing to the north, in Hainault, but most housing tends to be owner-occupied (77%). Seventy-two percent is terraced or semi-detached, inhabited largely by lower-middle-class, skilled, non-manual workers. It's also a district where a high number of London cabbies live. Taxi drivers are often said to have right-wing views, but Ilford North managed to elect a Labour MP in 1997, even though the previous Tory incumbent, Vivian Bendall, spoke for the Taxi Drivers' Association in Parliament. Before 1997, Labour had only won a version of this seat once - in October 1974. Linda Perham triumped here on a 17% swing in '97 and managed to hold on in 2001, again against her predecessor, while colleagues Eileen Gordon and Keith Darvill were defeated by larger swings in nearby Romford and Upminster. The constituency now includes Woodford Bridge, which was part of Winston Churchill's old seat of Wanstead and Woodford. Although Woodford is not as Conservative as it was, the natural inclination of Ilford North is probably to the Tories. Linda Perham has won twice against the odds: but she nurses a narrow majority of 2,115.
