Description |
Hornsey & Wood Green is the western of the two constituencies in the north London borough of Haringey - Tottenham is the other. However, Hornsey & Wood Green is by far the more affluent, bordering on Hampstead and containing Highgate Village, and more recently trendy areas like Muswell Hill and Crouch End. Almost 45% of the working population are in managerial or professional occupations. The Hornsey part is mostly residential with a high proportion of private rented accommodation. Wood Green has a large shopping and service development and also contains the heights of Alexandra Park and Palace, famous as the early home of BBC Television. Until 1992 the Conservatives had always held Hornsey - Sir Hugh Rossi held on to the seat for 26 years until his retirement. Barbara Roche, selected from an all-woman shortlist, won for Labour in 1992 by just over 5,000 votes. In 1997 she quadrupled her majority to 20,500 - nearly 40%. However, in 2001 her numerical majority was almost halved. Mrs Roche has had ministerial jobs as trade minister, financial secretary to the Treasury and, post-election, in the Cabinet Office. She lost her portfolio in the reshuffle of June 2003.
