Description Hendon lies on the north-west inner edges of London where the M1 arrives and is criss-crossed with arterial roads. It includes the police training college, RAF museum, national Newspaper Library and the Brent Cross shopping centre - a revolutionary development when it opened in the 1970s. Most of the private housing here was built in the inter-war years and there is a fair, but declining proportion of council stock, particularly at Watling in Burnt Oak. The Mill Hill suburb is a well-disposed area where aspiring, non-manual workers live. Many of these are from Asian communities. There is also a sizeable Jewish population. The area's politics is also mixed. Previously Hendon North was a Conservative seat and had been so since 1945. The battle to retain the Accident and Emergency department at Edgware Hospital, based in the constituency, badly damaged the party and they lost the seat in 1997 to Labour's Andrew Dismore, a solicitor. In 2001 his majority rose by 1,300 to 7,417 and he increased his majority to 18% over the Conservatives.
