Description |
Harrow West is based on a number of old villages, such as Harrow-on-the-Hill, Pinner and Hatch End. It is a suburban, largely residential area, the focus of a number of housing developments during the inter-war years. It epitomises John Betjeman's "Metroland" with high levels of owner-occupation and low levels of council housing. To all intents and purposes, the divide between the seats of Harrow West and East is an artificial boundary useful only in Parliamentary terms. Residents of both seats use Harrow town centre which, thanks to the way the border was drawn, lies just yards in the east seat rather than the west. It shares its principal shopping areas with next door Harrow East, the border between the two seats running north-south through the area residents would know simply as Harrow. Like many parts of greater London it has extensive transport links for commuters. Before 1997 it was virtually inconceivable that this seat could fall to Labour. In 1992 Labour had barely made second place and were 18,000 votes behind the Tories. However, Labour's Gareth Thomas took this seat in 1997 with a majority of 1,240 over Robert Hughes. His majority increased in 2001 to 6,156 when he defeated Conservative policy guru, Danny Finkelstein.
