Description |
The total population of the London Borough of Harrow is just 220,000 and covers an area of 20 square miles. There are two Parliamentary seats - East and West. East covers an area from Stanmore to Kenton. Residential in character it include the main Harrow town centre shopping complexes by virtue of where the boundary between the two seats was drawn. Labour took Harrow East in 1997 on an 18% swing when council leader, Tony McNulty, defeated the sitting Conservative MP, Hugh Dykes. This was in part due to particular local issues, including the threatened closure of the Accident and Emergency department in neighbouring Edgware General Hospital. In 2001 Mr McNulty's majority increased to 11,124. He was made minister of state at the Department of Transport in September 2004.
