Description |
One of three seats that lie within Croydon council area - the most populous borough in London - and the only one which is presently Conservative. It is the southernmost end of the borough and includes the areas of Purley, Coulsdon and Selsdon - tree-lined, affluent and suburban. Selsdon is remembered from a Conservative away-day on economic policy in the 1970s which gave rise to the phrase "Selsdon Man". Purley was the home of the sitcom couple, Terry and June in the long-running 1970s TV show. This is one of the most middle-class seats in the country and has much more in common with the adjacent Surrey constituencies than with London. One of three seats created out of four in the 1995 boundary review, it has the highest proportion (85%) of white residents; the lowest unemployment, and 80% owner-occupation. Its good rail links mean it has the heaviest commuter population. The A23 links Croydon directly to the M23 and M25. Conservative parliamentary success here is mirrored in local elections. The current MP is shadow environment secretary, Richard Ottaway, who has represented the area since 1992. He was formerly MP for Nottingham North between 1983 and 1987. He holds the seat with a majority of nearly 9,000 votes or 20%.
