This seat takes in all of the pre-1997 Southend East constituency, which dominates this one, with the addition of Rochford making up a relatively small part. It is something of a mystery why Rochford gets the prominent position in this seat's name. Southend East is more working class than its sister constituency of Southend West, and it is here that the town centre and main offices of this coastal resort are located. The town's most famous landmark is its pier. It is the world's longest pleasure pier at 1.33 miles long and was opened in 1889. Over the years has suffered two fires and two boat crashes. The section added to the old Southend East seat is to the east and north of the town. There is Rochford itself, and Great Wakering, along with the generally flat and sparsely populated area between the River Roach and the mouth of the Thames. This includes Foulness Island, which is where London's third airport - Maplin Airport - was originally due to have been built. In Southend, Labour's successes tend to be confined to the poorest wards in the town centre - Victoria, Kursaal and St. Luke's are the only wards where they have any success, with the Tories mopping up most of the rest and running the council with a large majority. Veteran Eurosceptic MP Teddy Taylor is stepping down from Parliament in 2005. He is popular locally and has accrued a decent personal vote with an 18.8% majority.
