Description |
The area is predominantly rural and includes a small part of the fens. Not surprisingly, farming is an important part of the local economy, both crops and raising turkeys - the animal most common in northern Norfolk. Defence cuts have meant air bases have closed but the Ministry of Defence still owns a large tract of land used as a battle training Area. The seat has a rich history. Nelson attended school at Downham Market and Tom Paine was born at Thetford in 1737. One site recalls an even earlier community - at Cockley Cley an Iceni village has been recreated on what is believed to be the site of a 1st Century village dating from the time of Boudicca, the East Anglian Iceni Queen who challenged the Roman army. This seat has a history of swimming against the electoral tide - it went Labour in 1955 and then abandoned the party in 1964 - but now seems firmly planted in the Conservative camp. Tory MP Gillian Shephard had a close shave at the 1997 general election, but by 2001 had an impressive 17.7% majority.
