Description The name Luton is derived from the old Norse name for "town of the Lea" - and the River Lea still runs through the seat. The constituency is crossed east west by the ancient Icknield way, and north south by the modern M1. Until the 1930s, the area that comprises Luton North was largely farmland, and this heritage survives in the name of Luton's major estates - Lewsey Farm, Marsh Farm and Bramingham Farm. Former villages such as Challney, Leagrave and Limbury are now large-scale residential areas. Prior to the 1995 boundary changes, most of Luton North's area comprised the villages and hamlets between Luton and the small town of Flitwick. However, these changes converted Luton North into an exclusively urban constituency, losing 20,000 mainly rural voters to the new Mid Bedfordshire seat and gaining 7,500 town-dwellers from Luton South. Accordingly, Luton North, as currently constituted, is mainly residential, although it also contains Luton town. The seat has good transport links with the M1, and the Thameslink rail service to London running from Leagrave Station. It contains Luton's safest Conservative ward, Icknield, which harbours the town's most up-market housing. This seat has gone with the national result in every election since 1951, and is currently occupied by Labour man Kelvin Hopkins.
