Description |
This is a large, mainly rural constituency, which contains the Cambridge commuter-villes of Histon, Milton and Fulbourn, plus Linton on the border with Essex and the cathedral city of Ely. Although the major source of employment is farming, there is also a lot of hi-tech industry in this constituency. Cambridge Science Park falls within its borders, in Milton ward, and there is a new Research Park in Waterbeach. There is also the Granta Science Park near Great Abington on the A11. The farming is mainly arable with the northern side of the constituency, near Ely, dominated by sugar beet farming. There is also some potato, carrot, wheat and hay farming. In the east of the constituency towards Newmarket (the town is not actually in this constituency) there are many studs, including a major stud which is based in Snailwell. The Conservatives have only lost this seat or its predecessors once in the last 80 years.
