Description Northampton North is, geographically, the smallest constituency in Northamptonshire and the only seat in the county which does not share a border with another county. A large chunk of the constituency lies in the 1968 new town development of Northampton, which sprawls north east towards Wellingborough, north of the River Nene. Many of the people in this eastern part of the town came originally from the inner cities in search of jobs and a better life. Here are found neighbourhoods such as Thorplands and Links, which have been reliable for Labour, but the old council estate of Dallington is the party's best area. The Tories' best performances are usually found in residential areas such as the Headlands and Park wards. The town of Northampton became famous as the centre of Britain's boot and shoe industry; however, since that industry's decline, it has become a major distribution centre and something of a centre for financial services. The Weston Favell Credit Union is here, and is one of the oldest in the country. Also inside the seat's boundaries lies part of the headquarters of the Nationwide Building Society, whose links with the town go back to 1848. Northampton was in fact briefly a university town in the 13th Century until the students there behaved so badly that Henry III ordered that the town should never again have a university. Today, higher education continues in this constituency at University College Northampton. Labour MP Sally Keeble maintained her majority of just under 20% in 2001 despite a fall in her own vote share, as the Tories also lost ground to the Lib Dems.
