Description |
This is a mixed constituency containing some of the most popular residential areas in Leicester, especially in the Knighton area. The constituency has a significant Asian population, boosted by Ugandan Asians fleeing Idi Amin in 1972. There is also a prominent Afro-Caribbean community, especially in the Highfields area. Labour's Jim Marshall had held the seat almost continuously from 1974, but following his death in 2004 the Lib Dems' Parmjit Gill Singh took it at a by-election.
