Description |
The textile industry has traditionally been a major employer in Leicester. However, this remains an area of fairly widespread deprivation. While a great deal of regeneration money has been poured into the city's estates in recent years, with the majority being spent specifically in this constituency, it still scores highly on many indices of deprivation. Leicester West has the smallest non-white population of any of Leicester's three seats, and Labour support here stems from the working class white population. Leicester West is the only seat in the City of Leicester that was Labour throughout the Thatcher years. In 1997 and 2001, Labour's Patricia Hewitt was elected with the smallest majority of the three seats, though it still came in at 29% in 2001.
