Description |
Gedling is an overwhelmingly white, middle-class suburban seat to the north east of Nottingham, similar to Broxtowe to the west of the city and Rushcliffe to the south. The main settlements are Arnold, Carlton (the previous name of the seat) and Gedling itself, as well as the village of Burton Joyce. Gedling is actually an old mining area but those days are long past and now it provides a commuter base for Nottingham. The city's racecourse is also located here. Vernon Coaker, former leader of Rushcliffe Council, is Labour's first ever MP in Gedling. In 1995 the local authority, long-dominated by the Conservatives, narrowly fell to Labour. Two years later, the party had a parliamentary majority of 3,802 after Coaker defeated incumbent MP Andrew Mitchell. However, though the seat was not one of Labour's main targets. In 2001 he even managed to increase his majority to almost 5,600, while Labour lost nearby Newark.
