Description |
Lying to the north of Lincoln and bordered by the Lincolnshire Wolds, the town of Gainsborough is surrounded by lush agricultural land. The seat stretches out towards the widest point of the river Trent. One of the constituency's notable features is that since 2000 it has provided a home, at RAF Scampton, for the Red Arrows - the RAF aerobatic team. In the 1940s Scampton was also home to 617 squadron, better known as the Dambusters. The town of Gainsborough itself is home to about a third of the constituency's population. It has tended to provide much of the constituency's Liberal Democrat and Labour vote. This is balanced out by the rest of the largely rural seat which is usually Conservative territory. Tory Edward Leigh has managed to score decent majorities here in recent years.
