Description Although this constituency is named after the urban town of Corby, the majority of it is in the rural area of east Northamptonshire, which contains many villages and the market towns of Oundle, Thrapston, Raunds and Irthlingborough. Corby itself is a former steel-producing town, which used to have a huge steelworks exploiting the local iron ore resources. It attracted many workers from Scotland, hence there is still a large Scots community here. However, the steelworks was closed in 1979, causing significant unemployment locally at the time. The town benefited from Enterprise Zone and Assisted Area status in the 1980s and has now succeeded in establishing a diverse industrial and service economy involving hundreds of companies. It has also been chosen as a centre by more than 80 businesses from 16 overseas countries, not least because of Eurohub, a road-rail interchange which allows mile-long trains carrying 300 cars at a time to travel all the way from Corby to Paris. It has good road links via the A1/M1 (A14) link to the national motorway network. Many people living in the constituency today work in food processing and farming. IKEA also has a massive distribution warehouse here. Furthermore, a growing number of people are moving to the south of the seat, from Peterborough and Cambridge, in order to commute down to London from Kettering or Huntingdon. Oundle is a historic market town, situated on the banks of the River Nene. It holds an annual International Festival of Music as well as being home to a public school of the same name. Nearby is the village of Ashton, which plays host to the World Conker Championships on the village green on the second Sunday in October each year. This is a fairly finely balanced constituency, with the Labour urban core voting against the Tory rural fringe. As such, it has gone with the national trend in every election since its creation in 1983. However, Labour suffered a fall in its majority of almost 10% here in 2001.
