Description |
This seat, named after the local government district and the ancient forest of Charnwood, was created by the Boundary Commission in 1995. It is predominantly rural and lies between Leicester and Nottingham. Major employers in the area include Astra Pharmaceuticals, Morris Mechanical Handling, Taylors Bell Foundry, Brush, 3M Health Care and Redland Aggregates. Key skills areas are hosiery, knitwear, heavy electrical engineering and pharmaceuticals. Stephen Dorrell secured a 5,900 majority in 1997, largely due to the siphoning off of the most reliable Conservative voters from the surrounding Leicestershire constituencies. He increased his majority further to a healthy 16% in 2001.
