Description |
The constituency is predominantly rural. The traditional manufacturing industries in the area are textiles, clothing - in particular hosiery - and footwear. Stocking weavers are said to have come to Hinkley in the early 19th Century, and several hosiery and knitwear factories, such as Tonelli, Lee Ann, Turner and Jarvis, Counterpoint and Davenports are located in the constituency. However, the industry has been suffering since the late 1980s. Farming is the other major occupation - this is focused on pigs, beef and dairy farming. As in most of Leicestershire, farming has been in decline over the past few years. Bosworth was held by Labour from 1951 to 1970, but lost in 1970 to Adam Butler (son of Conservative grandee Rab). For much of the Labour period it was held by right-wing journalist and Labour MP Woodrow Wyatt. Labour's decline in the area can be attributed to the reduction of the influence of the old Leicestershire coalfield - especially with the transference of Coalville, the mining centre, to North West Leicestershire in 1983 - in addition to the growth of new private housing in the Leicester suburban belt and around Hinckley.
