Tyneside North is made up of nearly all of the old Wallsend constituency with a few minor boundary alterations including the loss of the Tyneside North ward itself. It is on the northern bank of the river Tyne although most of the seat is inland. Riverside ward includes the entrance to the Tyne Tunnel and the international ferry terminal. The whole constituency is encompassed in the western half of the North Tyneside council area. The main components are former mining villages, new private housing complexes and large sprawling council estates such as Killingsworth Township. Owner-occupation stands at just under 60% with 28% local authority rented. Swan Hunter shipyards used to be the main employer before the industry in general went into sharp decline. However, orders are picking up. In December 2000 the MoD signed an order for two Land Ship Docking vessels for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary which brought a further 2,000 jobs to the yard. Transco, Procter & Gamble and Viasystems are other major companies here. Having been Labour from 1973-2003 with the exception of 1986, North Tyneside council is now under no overall control with the Tories squeezing just ahead of Labour by one seat in the 2004 elections. Tyneside North, however, has the majority of Labour councillors, with two Conservatives in Benton and one in Weetside. The Parliamentary seat has also had a solid Labour tradition. In the 1920s it was represented by the first woman Cabinet minister, Margaret Bondfield and as Wallasend remained Labour after the war. In 1992, it was won by the former Secretary of State for Environment, Transport and the Regions, Stephen Byers, who resigned from the government in 2002 after he was accused of misleading people. He quit that June but retains Tyneside North with a 55% majority.
