Description The creation of the Tyne Bridge constituency in 1983 was a matter of some controversy because its boundaries, for the first time, ignored the natural barrier of the river. The seat incorporates sections of both Newcastle and Gateshead and contains most of the heart of the city. It includes the railway station, castle, cathedral and main shopping centre as well as the £22m Gateshead Millennium Bridge which famously winks as it tilts to let ships pass underneath. The Gateshead side may be best known to football fans as the former home to ex-England international Paul Gascoigne or 'Gazza'. Others will know the area as a new centre for the arts. The £77m Sage Gateshead music centre and concert hall opened in December 1994, and the Baltic centre for contemporary arts provides 3,000 square metres of art space in a former grain warehouse, allowing artists to work, sculpt and perform. There is a larger ethnic community here than in other parts of north east England. There is still a significant council-rented sector - almost 32%, while only 43% are owner-occupiers. Unemployment is high. Labour is solidly entrenched here, including Scotswood ward where Sir Jeremy Beecham, leader and local government supremo has his seat. The same is true for the Gateshead wards which largely consist of tightly-packed terraces and estates. The MP here since an 1985 by-election has been David Clelland. His majority in 1997 was a massive 65.7%, but fell slightly to 57.2% in 2001.
