Stockton-on-Tees was split into two Parliamentary constituencies, North and South, in 1983. While North has been Labour ever since, South has been held by all three parties. On the seat's creation, the existing MP for the abolished Thornaby seat, Ian Wrigglesworth, who had defected to the SDP, won by a mere 100 votes over the Conservatives (unlike his colleague Bill Rodgers who lost North). The tables were turned in 1987 when the Tories' Tim Devlin beat Wrigglesworth by 774. On both occasions Labour was in third place. Tim Devlin won again in 1992 (with Labour this time in second) but he was defeated in the 1997 Labour landslide by Dari Taylor, the daughter of the late Dan Jones, MP for Burnley between 1959 and 1983. Her 11,385 majority was achieved on a 16% swing. In 2001 this was reduced to 9,000 - still over 20%. Unlike many seats in the north east, Stockton South is largely middle-class in character and owner-occupation is high (77%). This is a diverse constituency which has been been a good measure of the election outcome in 14 of the last 16 polls.
