Description This coastal constituency, created in 1974, is sandwiched between Middlesbrough to the south and Hartlepool to the north. It is urban and heavily industrial, the main industries being oil, chemicals and steel. There is also some tourism around the seaside resort of Redcar with its racecourse. Unemployment is double the national average - and 22% of workers are part-time. On the most recent index of multiple deprivation, one ward - Grangetown - is ninth most deprived in the country. The borough of Redcar & Cleveland as a whole is the seventh most deprived in the country. For some years this seat was associated with one person - Mo Mowlam. She first won Redcar in 1987 and, within three terms, rose to Cabinet rank as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. In addition she increased Labour's majority in Redcar to 21,667. However she decided to step down in 2001 and the seat went to London barrister, Vera Baird. Labour's majority fell to 13,443, but is still a healthy 35.2%. Labour was in control of Redcar & Cleveland council prior to 2003 but, after those local elections, there is now a three-way coalition between the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the East Cleveland and Eston Independents.
