Description |
This seat consists of 12 of the 16 wards from the old Paisley North seat plus eight of the 15 wards from the old West Renfrewshire seat. The constituency is bound to the north and east by the River Clyde. The old Paisley North seat was industrial, but the new extension to the north west takes in some small suburban towns from Renfrewshire. Linwood, site of the former Hillman Imp car plant, and the town of Renfrew are also in the constituency. Ferguslie Park housing estate on the outskirts of Paisley has undergone considerable refurbishment. Also on the outskirts of the town is the expanding Glasgow Airport where a second runway is proposed. The seat takes in the new Braehead Centre, a large shopping and leisure complex which has lured droves of shoppers from the big department stores of Glasgow and Paisley city centre. In nearby Bishopton, the Royal Ordnance Factory, a big employer, closed down four years ago. The site was taken over by BAe Systems who maintain a small presence, mainly clerical staff. The towns of Bridge of Weir, Houston and Langbank are mainly middle class owner-occupied areas.
