Description |
This new seat consists of the whole of the old Motherwell & Wishaw seat plus three wards from Hamilton North & Bellshill and one ward from Airdrie & Shotts. This is a slice of industrial Lanarkshire lying to the east of the M74, the main route from the west of Scotland into northern England. The constituency is dominated by Motherwell, which suffered the closure of the Ravenscraig steelworks in 1992, and the resultant high unemployment in an area which was economically-dependent to a large extent on steel and its associated industries. There are ambitious plans for the site; the proposals include a sports centre, housing development, an educational campus and a major retail park. However, this is still in the planning stage and there have been various objections to the development from the business communities in Motherwell, Wishaw and Hamilton. The industrial landscape is relieved by the sprawling Strathclyde Country Park which includes a 200-acre loch, reclaimed from the site of a former mining village.
