Description |
This seat consists of 12 of the wards from the old Clydesdale constituency, plus five wards from the old Hamilton North and Bellshill seat and four wards from the old Hamilton South seat. In the north, the seat comprises a narrow urban strip covering the towns of Uddingston, Bothwell and the eastern half of Hamilton. The constituency then broadens out to take in Larkhall, where a major regeneration programme is under way. It includes the scenic Clyde Valley which is peppered with orchards, nurseries and garden centres, Carluke and the historic county town of Lanark which was proclaimed a royal burgh in 1140. To mark this event the ancient Lanimers Day parade has been held on the second Thursday in June ever since except in 1983 - when Margaret Thatcher called a General Election for that day. The parade organisers wrote to her, asking that the election be cancelled. Her reply is not on record. Needless to say the parade had to be postponed. Also records reveal the very first meeting of the Scots Parliament was held in Lanark in 878 AD with King Kenneth the Second presiding. On the outskirts is New Lanark, Robert Owen's pioneering village founded in the 18th century around large cotton mills, now a major visitor attraction.
