Description |
The seat comprises the old Greenock & Inverclyde seat with the addition of five wards from the old West Renfrewshire seat. The constituency now covers the whole of the Inverclyde council area. The constituency runs along the south bank of the Clyde from the east of Port Glasgow to Greenock, then turns the 'Tail of the Bank' to include the dormitory seaside town of Gourock and the Firth of Clyde coast as far as Wemyss Bay. It turns inland south west of Port Glasgow to take in the prime residential area around Kilmacolm. Greenock was shaped by heavy industries, but decline in this sector has meant the town has had to change to meet the demands of the new electronic age and service sector industries. The harbourside areas have now been cleared to make way for modern developments. The only construction shipyard still in operation is Ferguson's in Port Glasgow, while neighbouring Gourock used to be the favourite holiday spot for Glaswegians at the end of the 1880s. Inland, the leafy village of Kilmacolm is a popular residential area and there are examples of the work of many of Scotland's finest architects, including Charles Rennie Mackintosh, among the grand houses.
