This new constituency is based on the old seat of the same name, which loses four wards to Banff & Buchan and five to West Aberdeenshire & Kincardine. It also gains five wards (and over a third of its electorate) from the old Aberdeen North seat. It is rather similar to the old constituency that was drastically altered in the boundary changes of 1995. It extends inland from the North Sea coast to the north of Aberdeen, making the constituency predominantly a dormitory for commuters to the city. The town of Inverurie is a thriving community with recent spurts of private house building and retail development. The most important industries include forestry, agriculture and food processing. The town of Ellon is an important base for engineering supplies for the oil and gas industry.
