Description |
This consists of the old Edinburgh Pentlands seat, with the exception of South Morningside, which was shared with the old Edinburgh South seat, and Fairmilehead, both of which go to the new Edinburgh South constituency. The constituency also includes four wards from the old Edinburgh Central seat. Narrow at the city centre end, it broadens out through council estates to leafy suburbs and picturesque countryside. It is home to two breweries, Scottish and Newcastle and Caledonian. This is a socially diverse seat, though the majority of the inhabitants are comfortably off and many are engaged in well paid, non manual jobs. The historically-problematic Wester Hailes council estate is situated here. However, much of the estate was restructured in the 1980s and rebuilding and re-planning is ongoing. The estate contrasts with the middle class districts of Colinton and Balerno, and smaller communities in the shadow of the Pentland Hills. The constituency is home to one of the city's two Premier League football clubs, Heart of Midlothian FC.
