Description |
This is the old Edinburgh East & Musselburgh constituency minus the five Musselburgh wards which go to East Lothian. The seat also includes three wards from Edinburgh Central and one ward from Edinburgh South. The constituency stretches from Leith along the Firth of Forth taking in the Victorian seaside resort of Portobello with its long sandy beach. In the north west it stretches into the Old Town and the city centre. It is now one of the most attractive urban seats in Britain with historical landmarks such as Edinburgh Castle, St Giles Cathedral, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the controversial Scottish Parliament building, as well as Arthur's Seat. It takes in the south side of Princes Street with the Princes Street Gardens and the Scott Monument. The less attractive side is in the east with many tenements and the notorious Craigmillar estate which is undergoing radical redevelopment with the demolition, re-planning and rebuilding of the area. Socially the seat is very mixed, with tourism the main industry. It is also home to the Meadowbank Sports Stadium, which has hosted two Commonwealth Games. One of the Capital's two Premier League football teams, Hibernian FC, is in the constituency at the Easter Road stadium.
