Description |
This comprises the old East Kilbride constituency with the addition of three wards from the old Clydesdale seat. The changes make little difference to the political or social composition of the seat, which mainly lies along the west side of the M74 south of Glasgow, and is dominated by East Kilbride, Scotland's first 'new town', established in 1947. The town centre is completely under cover and was one of Scotland's first shopping malls. Light engineering and service industries are the main generators of economic wealth. Important employers include Rolls Royce and Freescale (formerly Motorola) which manufactures telecom equipment. The constituency's rural hinterland stretches south to include the villages of Chapelton, Glassford and the rural market town of Strathaven, the centre of which is a conservation area. The town is famous for toffee and every year it hosts an international hot air balloon festival. The seat also includes the pretty villages of Lesmahagow and Blackwood as well as Stonehouse, an old mining village, which has become a commuter area for Hamilton, Glasgow and Kilmarnock.
