Description |
This consists of the old Banff & Buchan constituency with the addition of four wards from the old Gordon constituency. It is located to the north of Aberdeen and comprises a long stretch of North Sea coast-line and an agricultural hinterland. The two largest towns Peterhead and Fraserburgh are major fishing ports, as well as SNP strongholds. They've both been badly affected by EU fishing restrictions, but enterprise action plans are in place to encourage the towns to build towards the future. The constituency contains St Fergus, a vast gas terminal where nearly 50 per cent of the UK's gas is pumped ashore. Peterhead Prison is in the constituency and has Scotland's only specialist unit for sex offenders. The prison was threatened with closure in March 2002 but a strong campaign by the local community led by prison officers' wives managed to reverse that decision. The new wards centre on Turriff, an area which used to be Conservative-inclined. It's an old established market town, with a large annual agricultural show, and is immortalised in a popular Scottish folk song. Tourism is important to the region and it has some spectacular scenery and beautiful coastal villages.
