Description This comprises nine of the 14 wards from the old Cunninghame South constituency plus 11 wards from the old Ayr constituency and Annbank Mossblown St Quivox from the old Carrick, Cumnock & Doon Valley constituency. Central Ayrshire Constituency is made up of a varied mixture of urban, industrial and rural environments. It stretches from the town of Prestwick in the south, northwards to the eastern part of Kilwinning, and takes in the industrial and township areas of Irvine, the golfing paradise of Troon - which last year hosted the Open Championship - and numerous rural villages. Traditional industries within the area are based on farming, paper production, and other strong manufacturing, service and tourism sectors. Aerospace activity around Prestwick International Airport, with numerous companies engaged in engine maintenance and repair work, has proved a boon to the local economy, as has the current construction of a future Air Traffic Control Centre. The airport itself is now the hub of tourist and business passenger travel, linking Scotland with 17 destinations, as well as providing a high volume freight network, and numerous charter destinations. Sports facilities abound; as well as Royal Troon's golfing prowess, Prestwick was the first venue for the Open, with numerous other courses throughout the area.
