Description |
This constituency comprises seven of the 18 wards from the old Ayr constituency, nine of the 20 wards from the old Carrick, Cumnock & Doon Valley constituencies, and three wards that were split between the two constituencies. It combines the town of Ayr, made up of a mixture of council estates to the north end, and solidly middle class areas to the south. It takes in the old coal mining area of South Ayrshire in the Doon and Afton valleys, and the rich farmland of Carrick, including the internationally-famous Turnberry golf course, and Culzean Castle, where President Eisenhower once stayed. The area is steeped in history and culture, together with a wide range of leisure and sporting facilities, including the racecourse at Ayr. There are numerous high quality visitor attractions and leisure facilities, with tributes to the poet Robert Burns including Burns' Cottage, the Burns Monument and other links at Alloway. Culzean Country Park and Castle are popular tourist attractions.
