Description |
This new constituency consists of 8 of the 14 wards from the old Aberdeen North constituency plus 11 of the 14 wards from the old Aberdeen Central constituency. The new constituency bears little resemblance to the old one of the same name. The northern suburbs of the city have been removed; these provided strong support for the Liberal Democrats in the local elections. It now covers an area of the city from the River Don to the city centre. The proportion of social renters is relatively large reflecting the presence of a number of large council estates. In these and other traditionally working-class areas Labour is challenged mainly by the SNP. Only the up-market Midstocket ward stands out as an area of Conservative strength. In general the constituency has pockets of deprivation. Landmarks include Pittodrie Stadium, the home of Aberdeen football club, founded in 1903. There's also the sprawling Aberdeen Royal Infirmary medical complex which is the size of a small town . It has a teaching hospital, maternity hospital, children's hospital, an eye treatment centre, a research facility with some of the UK's leading experts on MS as well as all the acute services. The seat is also home to Aberdeen University, one of the oldest in the UK, founded in the 15th century, and takes in much of the harbour area as well as the city's conference centre and the airport.
