Description This constituency has been the seat of the current Northern Ireland Secretary Paul Murphy since 1987. He took over from the reforming Labour MP Leo Abse, famous for introducing private member's bills such as legalising homosexuality. Like so many other valley communities, the towns that compose Torfaen, such as Pontypool, Blaenafon, Cwmbran, have generally voted Labour. Torfaen held out against the Plaid Cymru surge in the first assembly elections. And Labour's Lynne Neagle won comfortably again here in 2003. She became one half of the only husband-and-wife team in the assembly: her husband is Huw Lewis, who represents the nearby seat of Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney. Formerly called Pontypool, the seat, coincides with the boundaries of the Torfaen local authority area. Torfaen is also on the list of world heritage sites because of the former coal, iron and steel town of Baenafon. It was awarded the title following its important role in the industrial revolution. Now the pit there is forms the National Mining Museum of Wales. The constituency also holds one of Wales' finest parks, the 150-acre Pontypool Park complete with a museum and a dry-ski slope.
