Description Since the last general election, Newport has been granted city status as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee. Newport's claim to historical fame is as the site of the largest Chartist uprising, an event commemorated by numerous street names and memorials. One of the most striking recent developments is the five-star Celtic Manor Hotel and its golf courses, just off the M4. The brainchild of the Newbridge-born computer multi-millionaire Sir Terry Matthews, it will be the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup. The city has been hit by bad economic news in recent years, particularly with major job losses at the Llanwern steelworks. But Wales's first urban regeneration company, Newport Unlimited, has been set up with the aim of replacing the thousands of jobs lost in steel and other industries. The Newport West constituency contains both the poorest and richest parts of the city. Newport West is now regarded as dependable territory for Labour, despite returning a Conservative MP at the height of Margaret Thatcher's success. The independent-minded Labour MP Paul Flynn has been the MP since 1987. Labour's Rosemary Butler comfortably won the assembly seat here in both 1999 and she maintained her strong majority at the 2003 election.
