Description The Tories have chosen a former Welsh Assembly member to fight this key two-way marginal at the next election. David Jones replaced the colourful former Welsh Tory Leader Rod Richards in the Assembly after Mr Richards resigned to deal with personal problems. Should Mr Jones win, it will be the second time he would replace Rod Richards who used to represent Clwyd West in parliament. Before this constituency underwent a slight change of name and boundaries in 1997, it was a safe Conservative seat. The seat was represented by Sir Anthony Meyer - "stalking horse" challenger to Margaret Thatcher for the Tory leadership in 1989. The combative former Welsh Office Minister Rod Richards held the seat until 1997. The seat's claim as a Conservative stronghold changed with Tony Blair's 1997 landslide. Labour's Gareth Thomas retained his seat in 2001 too, but with a reduced majority to 1, 115. At assembly level Clwyd West was a three-way marginal in 1999, but in 2003, it was a dual between the Tories and Labour. Labour's Alun Pugh held on to the constituency seat by just 436 votes. He is now the Culture Minister in the assembly. The seat covers a large area of central north Wales. On the coast, it runs from Rhos on Sea to Kinmel Bay, taking in Colwyn Bay, with a high number of retired people from England. Further inland, it covers the town of Ruthin and inland rural areas with a greater proportion of Welsh-speakers. Tourism is the area's main industry, but agriculture is more important away from the coast and manufacturing is also significant.
